Walky App
The Walky App is a project where I created a concept for a fitness app that would help users find nearby routes to walk.
Objective: Design a mobile app and establish the branding and design system for said app.
Process: The process started by determining what type of app I wanted to design. After figuring this out, my next step was to determine the types of users that would use this app. I would then create personas to emulate some of the potential user's expectations for the app. Furthermore, I would create a user journey and user flowchart before creating wireframes and a cohesive design system that would frame the entire app. Finally I would prototype the app to make it feel like a real working app and test how users navigated through it.
Idea of the Mobile App
Here is a list of some of the questions and ideas that I had while thinking of the potential idea and name for the mobile app. There were many mobile apps that focused on fitness but I wanted to create something that would make it easy for people to find nearby routes and places to exercise. For example, I like to go for runs, however, I often don't know where to run or what route to run. This app would help users find routes to run on so they wouldn't have to think too much about the planning process and could get straight to exercising.
Creating Personas
The next step after creating the idea for the mobile app was to create user personas to determine what type of users would use the app and what types of concerns or expectations they would have for the app. This image showcases a potential user persona.
User Journey
User Journey Maps are a common UX tool.
They come in all shapes, sizes, and formats. Depending on the context, they can be used in a variety of ways. A journey map is a visualization of the process that a person goes through in order to accomplish a goal. In its most basic form, journey mapping starts by compiling a series of user actions into a timeline. Next, the timeline is fleshed out with user thoughts and emotions in order to create a narrative. This narrative is condensed and polished, ultimately leading to a visualization. This user journey follows the persona created in the previous step.
User Flowchart
In this step, I used the information that I gathered from the previous steps to create a flowchart that a user may experience while using the app. This app would have a slightly different flowchart since it's an app compared to a website. Furthermore, ensuring that the user could navigate throughout the app efficiently is important to ensure the usability and accessibility of the app.
Design System
After creating the user flowchart, I created the design system concurrently while also creating the wireframes. The design system is important for this since it's an original app design, I needed to create my own icons and color scheme that felt cohesive and true to the brand. I also had to create a logo for the app that would encapsulate the identity of the app.
Wireframes
The wireframing process started with low-fidelity wireframes and continued throughout to high-fidelity wireframes. Creating different layouts and seeing which ones would be most effective allows the user to navigate through the app. (images are high fidelity wireframes)
Prototyping
After creating the wireframes, using the user flowchart from earlier, I created a prototype of the app design to get a realistic feel for how the app would flow with the elements from the high-fidelity wireframes. This allowed me to see how the user would be able to navigate through the app and if it was effective or not.
